Author Jordan Scott uses his own personal experience as a stutterer as inspiration for I Talk Like a River. A young boy cannot find the words to speak and his compassionate parents help him accept and overcome stuttering.
Mentor Text: Use this title for teaching word choice, and for them. Teachers should read then reread the book and have students notice how the author creates a mood of compassion and acceptance throughout. Lastly, point out the author's message at the last few pages of the book.
